  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • For the frosting:
  • 2 cups light brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 3 tablespoons caramel sauce, optional, for garnish

Directions

Step 1 -Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Step 2 -Grease and flour a 13x9-inch baking pan.

Step 3 -In a mixing bowl, add the sugar, the flour, and the cocoa and stir to combine.

Step 4 -In a saucepan, boil 1 stick of the butter, the oil, and the water for 1 minute.

Step 5 -Pour the oil mixture into the sugar mixture and blend them together with an electric mixer on medium speed for 1 minute.

Step 6 -In another bowl, whisk the eggs and the buttermilk together.

Step 7 -Add the egg mixture to the batter mixture and blend with an electric mixer on medium speed until it is combined.

Step 8 -Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 35 minutes.

Step 9 -Let the cake cool on a wire rack.

Step 10 -While the cake is cooling, in a large saucepan over medium heat, add the brown sugar, the milk, and the remaining butter and stir until it comes to a boil.

Step 11 -Boil the milk mixture, while whisking constantly, for 1 minute.

Step 12 -Transfer the icing mixture to a bowl.

Step 13 -Add the vanilla and the confectioners' sugar to the icing mixture and use an electric mixer on medium speed to blend it until no lumps are present.

Step 14 -Mix the icing mixture on low speed until it thickens, about 3 minutes.

Step 15 -Stir the salt into the icing.

Step 16 -Spread the icing over the cake, doing so before the icing cools, otherwise it will harden.

Step 17 -Drizzle the cake with the caramel sauce.

Step 18 -Slice and serve.
