Ingredients
- For the cake:
- 2 cups sugar
- 2 cups self-rising flour
- 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
- 1 stick butter
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup water
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- For the frosting:
- 2 cups light brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 cup butter
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 cups confectioners' sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
- 3 tablespoons caramel sauce, optional, for garnish
Directions
Step 1 -Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Step 2 -Grease and flour a 13x9-inch baking pan.
Step 3 -In a mixing bowl, add the sugar, the flour, and the cocoa and stir to combine.
Step 4 -In a saucepan, boil 1 stick of the butter, the oil, and the water for 1 minute.
Step 5 -Pour the oil mixture into the sugar mixture and blend them together with an electric mixer on medium speed for 1 minute.
Step 6 -In another bowl, whisk the eggs and the buttermilk together.
Step 7 -Add the egg mixture to the batter mixture and blend with an electric mixer on medium speed until it is combined.
Step 8 -Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 35 minutes.
Step 9 -Let the cake cool on a wire rack.
Step 10 -While the cake is cooling, in a large saucepan over medium heat, add the brown sugar, the milk, and the remaining butter and stir until it comes to a boil.
Step 11 -Boil the milk mixture, while whisking constantly, for 1 minute.
Step 12 -Transfer the icing mixture to a bowl.
Step 13 -Add the vanilla and the confectioners' sugar to the icing mixture and use an electric mixer on medium speed to blend it until no lumps are present.
Step 14 -Mix the icing mixture on low speed until it thickens, about 3 minutes.
Step 15 -Stir the salt into the icing.
Step 16 -Spread the icing over the cake, doing so before the icing cools, otherwise it will harden.
Step 17 -Drizzle the cake with the caramel sauce.
